Since Saturday was my 40th birthday, this means that #1) I probably have to consider myself an “adult” now, and #2) after each of my quizzes this week, your team will ask me one question about a topic of my choosing . . . if I get it wrong, you get a bonus point for the night! Some topics I have selected in previous years include Star Wars, John Steinbeck, Revenge of the Nerds, Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons . . . and there’s just no telling what will tickle my fancy this year. East Burn, Jade Lounge, & Sewickly’s will definitely include Birthday Smackdown point opportunities, but I just might make guest appearances at other venues this week as well.


Still more shenanignas are afoot this week! Tonight at Yurs Bar & Grill, and Tuesday at Sewickly’s, we will award extra prizes to the highest scoring teams - hats, shirts, and movie passes to George Clooney’s new film, The American! And, unlike previous movie passes I have given away, these are to be used at normal movie screenings, which means that you don’t have to deal with passholes! Hint: we’ll give you at least a couple of G-Cloo point opportunities at each of those quizzes.

Congratulations to our Disney trivia champions - Was It Good For You? Competition was stiff, but they ultimately identified more character photos, villain voices, and Disney lore & music than any other team. They are eager for more competition, and anxiously await a Pixar lunar quiz (which will probably happen in 2011). Our next theme night will be this very Thursday at 9:00. Michele & Charlene will take you back to a special place & time: Beverly Hills, 1990s. The Peach Pit wasn’t available, so La Merde offered to host the affair. If Beverly Hills ain’t your kinda place, come to The World Famous Kenton Club instead! Regular Triviology will rock forth, with Trivia Jock Brent as your host!

This, by the way, is the very last quiz at this venue. I do wish I could be there, but I will be watching Kyle get married - sorry ladies, he’s taken! And while he’s wining and dining his lovely new wife in Mexico, I will have a couple of substitutes lined up for the next two weeks at his venue, The World Famous Kenton Club. This Thursday, I am thrilled to annouce the return of Trivia Jock Brent! He actually founded Triviology at the Kenton Club, and had to retire to focus on his day job. On the following Thursday, I will host Kenton myself, while Michele rocks La Merde with a rad night of Beverly Hills 90210 trivia. You have no excuse for forgetting the date - its on 9/02/10!

First of all, the champions for I Don’t Feel Tardy 3, my annual music quiz, are Nasty Habits. In addition to gift certificates to the bar, I awarded their captain, Karyn, a unique trophy - a leopard-skin Snuggie, presented James Brown style. It was a close competition, but Nasty Habits ultimately knew more lyrics to The Gambler, songs by The Gossip . . . and urban legendry of Phil Collins. Then, at Ella Street Social Club, Margaret once again hosted a night of Twin Peaks trivia: Damn Fine Quizzery - And Hot! As usual, she went above and beyond the call of duty for a TJ by baking a cherry pie for the lucky victors, Triple R (aka Laura’s Team).

Disney fans, this Saturday (8/21 @ 7:00) is The Happiest Quiz on Earth, which will take you to a wonderful world where cats form jazz bands, vultures talk like The Beatles, and elephants make you cry. Michele threatened to cut me if I didn’t let her write this one, so trust me, she is the right trivia jockey to host this tender lunar quiz, which will be the very last night of trivia at Peter’s. I wish I could be there too, but I will be attending Kyle’s wedding (sorry, ladies - he’s taken!). Congratulations, by the way, to Battlehorn Greywolf, who triumphed at the final weekly Peter’s quiz. In the 5 & 1/2 years I’ve been making the trivia, BHGW have always been strong contenders, but they were also the original Shit-Talkers - it’s only fitting that they got the final say at this venue. As to why I am retiring Peter’s, there’s not one particular reason. After the new owners took over, we gave it a try, we had some good nights, and I certainly do wish them luck . . . but I am confident that I can find a place that better serves the needs of my Triviologists (that’s you!). In fact, my trivia jockeys are trickling back into town this week, so . . . stay tuned for more great new venues!

I will prepare lots of general music trivia questions, audio clips of songs (as always!), and as a special treat, trivioke! For those of you that want something more specific . . . and mysterious . . . look no further than Ella Street Social Club, where, this Monday at 7, Margaret will host Damn Fine Quizzery - And Hot! No word on whether Bob’s Black Lodge Dream Team will be in attendance to defend their title - they won at the last Twin Peaks Triviology night: Chickadee On A Dodge Dart. But beware - Portland Mercury’s team will be back for a second shot at victory - read their titillating recap of the Twin Peaks trivia that got away!


I am very pleased with today’s article in The Oregonian - Kristi Turnquist wrote a fun piece about three different flavors of bar gaming in Portland. Margaret’s favorite part was when I likened public quizzery to public nudity, and the only thing I didn’t like (other than misprinting the Twin Peaks date - I assure that it is actually on 8/2!) was the implication that Jersey Shore is anything other than spectacular!

Thanks so much for the HawHide send-off, all ye who chanted “Four more years!” at my final quiz night there! You don’t have to miss me, though - while Charlene is away for the summer, I will simply take over her Monday nights at Jade Lounge - see you there at 7:00! And speaking of my trivia jockeys on hiatus, I will also take over Yur’s Sunday quizzes until Jon’s return in three weeks. You may wonder how this is possible, since I also host 6:00 trivia at East Burn . . . the answer is - by partnering up with Charlie Hustle! I’ll move at a crisper pace than usual, and I’ll have to cut the Let’s Get Physical challenge at East Burn on these three Sundays. Don’t worry though, I’ll still provide a fun, action-packed quiz, I’m just going to streamline it for maximum efficiency.
Also, to continue the theme of borderline chaos for the month of August, this Thursday, there will be no quizzery at Kenton Club. But no worries - just come to La Merde instead!

First, I just found out the East Burn’s Triviology is cancelled for tomorrow night, but will be back next Sunday as usual. East Burn sincerely apologizes for the short notice - they had scheduled a special event and forgotten to pass the word along. However, the silver lining is that this is the perfect opportunity for you to go check out my newest venue, Yur’s Bar & Grill, whose quizzery kicks of at 8:00.

Second, I am sad to say that this very Monday, July 26th, will be the final trivia night at Hawthorne Hideaway. After four years of fun, we have mutually decided to go our separate ways. All on good terms of course - I encourage you to keep enjoying HawHide’s mustache nights, free pool, and Craig’s chili! Come on out and snatch up the final win at this venue.

And just to end on a positive note, there is an article on Portland trivia nights coming out in The Oregonian real soon. I don’t know exactly when, but it was a good interview with fun questions, so I eagerly anticipate its publication. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful weekend!

I recently realized that a gathering of trivia jockeys should also have a particular group name: a query! Check out my glossary, which includes the other fun Triviology terms that I, and you, have come up with over the years.

Here some random highlights of a few of my venues, in case you’d like to venture from your home turf in search of The Dirty Dozen: Sewickly’s has cash prizes and new menu items; The Hutch on Glisan offers $100 in gift certificates split between the two highest scoring teams; Peter’s has not only a new happy hour during trivia, but brand new AC to cool off those hot summer nights!

I’d also like to give a shout out to a great, local, non-profit organization: Curious Comedy Theater. Weekends in July, they are doing an innovative show wherein local comics do covers of classic comedy routines. I’ve already seen “Steve Martin,” “Woody Allen,” the filthy “Red Foxx,” and the lovely Virginia Jones of Dr. Spaceman as Bill Hicks, but I want to go back and see “George Carlin,” “Sam Kinison,” “Monty Python,” and most importantly, Phyllis Diller!! Lots of other comedy covers too, throughout July - check their website for more details.

being the mighty team who won at four of my venues this week! They sat
out Wednesday night quizzery, but won every night they played (as Funke
Cold Medina & Kathleen Turner Overdrive). If you are wondering who
to cast envious eyes upon, behold these masters, fresh from their first
win of the week at Yur’s Bar & Grill:



And while I’m handing out kudos, I’d like
to sing Margaret’s
praises. Since her regular venue, Da
Club, was closed for Freedom on Monday, she had a rare night off to
actually play some Triviology (sounds like
fun, right?). But when she arrived at Jade Lounge, poor
Charlene
was looking and feeling sickly, so Margaret sent her home and hosted
the quiz instead. I’ve got a great crew working for me - thanks to
Charlene for being such a trooper and thanks to Margaret for making the
trivia on your night off!

And don’t worry about Charlene, folks, she
snapped back to health in time to lead her teams at Speakeasy to a
victory over Sewickly’s!
You see, we have a friendly little SouthEast intramural competition
each Tuesday - since we are simultaneously challenging our players with
the same questions, we compare the scores at the end of the night to see
who reigns victorious over the quadrant. There’s even a trophy which
lives at each triumphant bar for the week - congratulations to With Friends
Like BlackWatch, Who Needs You?! for winning the night for
Speakeasy! We’ll get it back next week though . . .

Twenty years ago, Laura Palmer was found
wrapped in plastic. Two years ago, Margaret
hosted a lunar quiz in her
honor. Now it is time to reprise the whole macabre affair. Monday,
August 2nd, at 7:00, you are summoned to Ella
Street Social Club to answer a few questions about the night this
horrible crime happened.

Be on alert - East Burn will be closed for the holiday tomorrow, so just head over to my newest venue, Yur’s Bar & Grill, to get your quiz fix. The 8:00 timing is perfect - after BBQs and before fireworks! We had a great debut there last week, by the way - kudos to my new trivia jockey, Jon! The weekly prize at Yur’s is a whopping $50 gift certificate to the bar - that’s pretty damn sweet, right? Plenty of money for your team to go America all over everybody’s ass with! Also, Ella Street Social Club’s Triviology will be on hiatus this Monday, but just like on Sunday, you can hop on over to one of my other venues instead - 7:00 at Jade Lounge or 8:00 at Hawthorne Hideaway.

Update on my oldest venue, Peter’s, where I hosted my very first Triviology night (Team Canada reigned supreme!). Five and a half years later, Peter’s has changed ownership, and I will indeed continue to make the trivia every Wednesday night at 8. Last week, they launched the brand new menu, which still includes their great burgers, sandwiches, pastas, and salads, but now you have a lot more choices - crab cakes, mac & cheese, baby back ribs, and Kyle’s new favorite, a giant bowl of steaming clams! Come on back to Peter’s, which you voted as your Favorite Triviology venue of 2008, and give the new menu a try!

The monthly, thematic lunar quizzery will continue, it’ll just be on a slightly different schedule for summer mayhem. Michele is planning a Disney quiz for you (the animated films!), and Margaret is plotting a Twin Peaks trivia night for early August. And here are a few other special events to look forward to:
