Triviopodogy
This weekly podcast posts every Friday, and is about a half hour in length. In each episode, ShanRock chats with a trivia team about a recent game, the questions, the quizzery experience, and lets the teams turn the tables on her by having them challenge her with queries. Most of the song intros and outros were composed by ShanRock for an annual terrible holiday song writing contest.
Triviopodogy: Episode #13
Venue: Retired Triviology venue Da’Hui
ShanRock’s Guest: Retired trivia jockey Michele,
who lives on in our hearts . . . and in our livers!
Join Michele and I for a trip down Triviology’s memory lane, and ear witness us both turning down free cocktails!! We remember choice moments from quiz nights for 90210 (guess which 90210 trading card is the shittiest!) and Disney (I narrowly escaped getting shivved!), and ponder future themes (Jodie Foster quiz night? Aaron Spelling Bee? Dickens trivia?). Listen to learn about the origins of triviaoke and of the Queers versus Breeders Trivia Showdown.
Triviopodogy: Episode #12
Venue: Sewickly’s
Guest host Kenny interviews the champions of the 2013 Comedy Cup Quiz at The Bridgetown Comedy Festival: local comic Veronica Heath AND The King Of TV, Paul Goebel!
This is the second consecutive Comedy Cup win for team “The Team In First Place”! Trivia jockey Kenny gets brownie points for Skype-ing in Paul Goebel, but immediately has them revoked by failing to answer the trivia question “Where is ShanRock from?” . . . it’s NORTH Carolina, guy! Learn how Paul makes hobos happy, get tips on spotting roofie chunks, hear a tender lament for the notoriously brutal Suki’s open mic night, imagine a place where Triviology trophies co-exist with law degrees, and discover who likes dirty jokes more – casino crowds or strip bar patrons. Oh, and many thanks to our friends at Funemployment Radio for the use of their recording studio.
Triviopodogy: Episode #11
Venue: Hawthorne Hophouse
ShanRock’s Guests: Sewickly’s Showdown champions POWER QUATTRO!!!!
Power Quattro are the inaugural champions of the Triviology Showdown – equal parts scavenger hunt, drinking game, trivia challenge, adventure race, embarrassment contest, and magical party! Listen as we pass along the lore of this quest; learn of The Kobyashi method, trivial poetry, and the Portland Short Bus. Discover what beverage is “summer in your mouth,” which Movie Madness film lists ShanRock in the cast, and how to win at Toddlers & Tiaras. Want more episodes? Listen up right here!
Triviopodogy: Episode #10
Venue: Bare Bones
ShanRock’s Guests: 4th Place Ponies and trivia jock Kenny
The delightful 4th Place Ponies chat with us about a recent win at Bare Bones, and a recent near miss at Walking Dead quiz night, as I attempt not to sick everyone out with my gross, hoarse voice. We discuss redneck butts, the trivia “pen drop,” good sportsmanship, and the fact that sluts rock. Kenny busts out a lateral lisp to illustrate polite versus rude protests, and I, a mere shiksa, have the nerve to call a Chosen One a bad Jew!
Triviopodogy: Episode #9
Venue: The Hutch
ShanRock’s Guests: champion team Odie & The Dirt Legs, runners-up
Ghost in the Trivia Machine, and trivia jock Brian
There’s a lotta love, and filth, in this episode – we all start out proclaiming our love for former trivia jockey Kyle, and end up talking about balls. In between, we give a shout out to the old school Beulahland trivia night, discuss owning obnoxiousness, out the team dicks, dream of dance-off competitions, and share stories about our ruthless gamer dads and the dark side of playing bridge. Listen to earlier Triviopodogy episodes right here!
Triviopodogy: Episode #8
Venue: Foggy Notion
ShanRock’s Guests: champion team Wrecking Balls, honorable mention team Dance Move Burglars, and comedian Stephanie Purtle
This episode was recorded after Domestic Goddess quiz night. In addition to the trivia questions, we discuss the iconic program that doesn’t have “very special episodes,” because the whole thing is a Very Special TV Show: “Roseanne”! As we lament the lack of Pink Squirrel drinks in the bar, we imagine the network battles that must have been fought, discuss our favorite episodes, and how well they dealt with issues that other sitcoms avoid, Roseanne’s stand-up comedy, and the infamous chicken shirt.
Triviopodogy: Episode #7
Venue: Amnesia Brewery
Guests: Trivia Jockeys Kevin & Sierra
Sadly, our delightful TJ Kevin is departing for the East Coast, so I sat him down to chat about his experience as a host and a quiz writer. Our trio of TJs talks about team names, critter dick trivia, how to deal with free booze, the process of quiz writing, trivial palate cleansers, learn how to make Sierra cry, and fail to solve the Seinfeld Jujyfruit caper.
Triviapodogy: Episode #6
Venue: Hawthorne Hophouse
Guests: Up To Our Balls In Crusty Jugglers, Miles Davis
In tonight’s episode, we have many players who crossed state lines to play the game, and learn about Chicago style trivia and Australian rules quizzery. We discuss how trivia keeps your mind sharp during periods of unemployment, why 1939 was a great year in cinema, and scoff at Bill Clinton’s notion that The White House is a “prison.” And just for fun, ShanRock embarrasses herself by blowing a Seinfeld trivia question, and by swapping names of two awesome trivia players – sorry, Mark and Sam!
Triviopodogy: Episode #5
Venue: The Speakeasy
Guests: Dance Move Burglars
This half hour trivia blast includes insights from trivia jock Paul, while ShanRock reveals the easiest Triviology round to write, and Dance Move Burglars suggest theme quizzes for the future (Clue? Video games?), proclaim their love for Speakeasy barkeep Morgan, discuss nudity in Deadwood, and share tender memories brought to them by Wheaties. Apologies to absent team member Becky for any unkind words spoken against Twilight!
Trivipodogy: Episode #4
Venue: Spare Room
Guests: She’s Got Sammie Davis (Brown) Eye
This is easily the drunkest episode thus far, as team She’s Got Sammie Davis (Brown) Eye celebrates their victory at my annual tournament, The Clash of the Trivia Titans! We talk about the night’s champions (Cobra Kai sweeping the Underdog Award’s leg, Olympian Envy for Boyfight, etc.), discuss Johnny Deputy Dawg, literary tales of vengeance, why La Merde is the best Triviology venue for finely crafted cocktails, coin a new phrase (the Spider Monty), and I rain sick burns down on Palmer. Fun fact: I cut out about two minutes of heated debate about Jackee – a very hot button issue with five people unintelligibly yelling at once!
Triviopodogy: Episode #3
Venue: Sewick’s
Guests: Boyfight!
In this episode, BOYFIGHT! re-imagines “Choose Your Own Adventure” as Star Wars sexual escapades, quizzes ShanRock on “Fight Club” queries, recreates the sounds of “Metalocalypse” & “Walking Dead,” learns which questions make me angry while writing them and which made me weep, and reveal whether they are anti-high-five or pro-high-five. Give a listen to previous episodes right here if you wish.
Trivipodogy: Episode #2
Venue: 15th Avenue Hophouse
Guests: Midas Touch My Balls
In this episode, the Balls discuss the athleticism of US presidents, reveal which Triviology trophies are their fondest desires, give instructions on how to craft fake testicles, and give a shout-out to their beloved 15th Ave. Hophouse barkeep, the lovely Lila!
Triviopodogy: Episode #1
Venue: La Merde
Guests: Dr. Bagelman’s Hour of Hate, Stab Wound Victims, Linda Is A Whore, PeePee In The Dark, Dirty Drifters, and Dana Plato’s Republic
With each podcast, ShanRock will chat with Triviology players fresh after a game, capturing the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! New episodes will post each Friday. The debut episode marks the 8th anniversary of Triviology, and in it, we do Thurston Howell impressions, discuss obscure fictional playwright Lionel Emory, use the “C” word in its proper context, and link Dustin Hoffman to Punky Brewster. Theme song is “acher” by She-Whore.
