Celebrate Mike Judge’s Catalogue With Me!

Sunday, August 30th, 2009
It’s time for another sneak preview ticket giveaway, and this film looks like a great one! This Thursday (August 27th at 9:00) at both of my Triviology venues (Kenton ClubLa Merde), Kyle and I will give away bunches of free passes (and free Slurpee coupons!?!) to an advanced screening of Extract, the new Mike Judge film. The Whammy round at both venues will celebrate Judge’s entire catalogue. Although “Office Space” might be his best work to date, I will use very little trivia from this film, since the upcoming Cubicle Quiz will combine your knowledge of this cult classic with The Office (US & UK versions). Attendance at this meeting is mandatory, so I’m gonna need you to go ahead and key this date into your PDAs – Saturday, October 3rd, Peter’s 19th Hole at 7:00. (And don’t forget Save Ferris – The John Hughes Trivia Night, also at Peter’s, is September 5th at 7:00!)

Many thanks to everyone who took this time to fill out my survey (which you can still take right here!) – I really want to know your opinion on things, since I can’t make the trivia without you! You helped me answer many important questions (I just KNEW that the vampire squid was better than the Giant Clam – in your face, Scott!), and I will post the thrilling results soon. I will tell you this, though – the leprekey‘s name is pretty much a three-way (tee hee!) tie (Mickey Finnegan, Limerick McGillicuddy, and Flingus O’Shaughnnessy are your favorites so far).

We are halfway through the Triviology season, which resets in February at the Clash of The Trivia Titans. Since that half-time happens to fall on the anniversary of my birth, that means that it is once again time for Birthday Smackdown Week! Here’s the deal – at all of my 6 venues, from August 30th to September 3rd, each team gets to ask me one question (to give me a fighting chance, I will give you a menu of topics to choose from). If you stump me, which you probably will, your team gains one point. What is the point of all this? Same as playing Triviology – for fun! You’ll get to ask questions for a change, and I’ll get to answer them. Basically, I’d like to be you for a day – it’ll be like Freaky Friday!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Ooligan Press fundraiser at Peter’s last Wednesday – we raised a lot of money for this non-profit PSU press while having some Triviology-style fun!

You Like To Play Trivia, Right?

Saturday, August 15th, 2009
You like to play trivia, right? Well, why wait an agonizingly long weekend to answer ShanRock questions when you can take the Triviology survey now?! My quizzes have 7 rounds; this survey has 7 questions. Triviology is fun to play, and the survey asks for your opinions on fun stuff. The “correct” answers will be revealed when I have enough responses to decide on the most pressing query – what shall I name my leprekey? I’ve even got selections laid out for you – just click your mouse a few times, and you’re done – I would truly appreciate your input. Here’s a picture of the little guy to inspire you:
One question which has overwhelming results so far concerns my next lunar quiz, Save Ferris – A John Hughes Trivia Night. I asked if people objected to my selection of films to focus upon: “16 Candles,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Breakfast Club,” “Weird Science,” and “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off.” So far, the vast majority wants me to indeed stick with these teen comedies, so unless the voting world gets turned on its ear, that will be the program. I hope to see you there, on Saturday, September 5th at Peter’s 19th Hole at 7:00. Costumes are encouraged . . .
and if fact, wearing an argyle sweater, tan trousers, and red shoes might be a good strategy – the other teams will think you’re “retarded.” As for upcoming lunar quiz themes, there is enthusiastic early support for The Cubicle Quiz (“Office Space” & “The Office”) and for the 1990s (pop culture and book learnin’ from the whole decade).

There are a couple of differences in the upcoming Triviology week schedule. First, Scott will be your host this Thursday at La Merde. Also, Wednesday at Peter’s, my format will be the same, but the night will be a fundraiser for Ooligan Press of PSU. I’ll still have plenty of pop culture, but the material will slant towards literature. Ooligan Press is asking for a $5 donation to their non-profit organization to play the quiz, and both they and Peter’s will award prizes. The grand prize for the winning team is $50 off your tab – that’s a pretty mighty reward for having fun, and a great excuse to buy yourself more beer!
