We Must Break Europe!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
First of all, gang, come on down to Ella Street Social Club tonight (and every Monday) at 6:00 for Triviology with Kyle and booze with GREAT happy hour prices! Next, on to future events . . .

The big news this week is the same as last week – my two special events to be held this Saturday, June 6th. They don’t come any bigger than World Quizzing Championship, though – I will host the Portland quiz, which will be held at The Spare Room at noon. Why so early? Because you’ll be answering the same questions as players on six different continents, because they will have long since finished their quizzes and will be eagerly awaiting our results,  and because I’m not willing to host it any earlier than noon! If you’ve ever wondered who your team MVP is, here’s your chance to go head to head with your crew and see who comes out on top (maximum team size is one!). The quiz will be divided into two halves – an hour each with a break in between, including eight different categories: Culture, Lifestyles, Media, World, Entertainment, History, Sciences, and Sport. Your final score will be tallied by combining the scores of your seven best topics – in other words, if you totally blow the sports round, fear not – it’ll be eliminated anyway! Maybe (?!) I’m a nerd, but I think it’ll be fun to see how Portland scores against Latvia, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Liberia, Argentina, Australia, etc. I do regret that Russia is not participating, though – so that we could rekindle a little cold war rivalry and send them threatening messages Rocky IV style!

Later that Saturday evening, join Trivia Jock Scott for I Don’t Feel Tardy 2, my second annual music trivia quiz! Put together a well-rounded team of five (or fewer) to answer questions about ALL kinds of music, including a video clip round, and a couple of audio clip rounds. The arena is Peter’s 19th Hole, the time is 7:00, and the prize is money off your bar tab!

Impending Worldwide Dominion

Sunday, May 24th, 2009
For those of you that are in town this weekend, rest assured that the Triviology will rock forth as usual at all of my venues. For you, the quizzers of Portland, I will leave my Sunday crawfish races and my sweet tea w/Makers behind to make the trivia at East Burn at 6:00, and at Ladd’s Inn at 9:00.

Folks, I’ve got big news about a couple of awesome special events on Saturday, June 6th. Most of you already know that on that night, Trivia Jock Scott will be hosting a music themed lunar quiz at Peter’s 19th Hole at 7:00. In addition, I have just joined the ranks of the 2009 World Quizzing Championships, and will host the Portland chapter of the competition at noon the same day! Why so early? Because the same quiz takes place all around the world at approximately the same time. Your team of one will be competing with individuals in Ireland, Malaysia, Lithuania, Australia, Bangladesh, Argentina, Liberia, etc. to be the most excellent participating quizzer in the world! It’s free to play, but the glory you may receive is endless. The quiz is about 2 & 1/2 – 3 hours long, and is about half pop culture & half academia, divided into several short, thematic rounds. In other words . . . my regulars will find the format familiar, and are likely to kick Norwegian and Philippine ass! To give folks an idea of the kind of questions they’ll be facing, I’ll use past World Quiz questions in many of my Whammy rounds in the next couple of weeks. I’m still settling on a venue for this event; in the meantime, let me know if you might be interested in playing so that I can get a general idea of participation. I hope you guys are as excited about this as I am – this is gonna be good!

I just love Willamette Week’s annual Drink Guide, but I love it even more when they throw props my way. In their infinite wisdom, they chose two of my venues for their Top Five list of quiz nights (and reserved a third slot for my friends at That’s So Gay Trivia, though their fabulous quiz is actually on Sundays), and dubbed me “Portland’s trivia queen”! I’m not the regal sort, yet I will answer your call, Willamtte Week; I accept the sceptre you have bewtowed upon me, and will indeed “reign supreme” as the mistress of minutia, and the empress of the ephemera. Maybe I’ll start wearing pearls and big hats, too. Here’s my first regal edict: have a fun, safe Memorial Day weekend!
