Portland vs. Budapest!

Saturday, June 5th, 2010
Tomorrow (Sat. June 5th) is your big chance to show off Portland’s intellect to the world – I will host the local edition of the annual World Quizzing Championships at The Spare Room at noon. The quiz is free to play, it lasts a couple of hours, and is played by individuals (rather than teams) playing simultaneously around the world. If you’re reading this, chances are excellent that you have a healthy competitive spirit, so you might well get a kick out of seeing how you stack up against Hungarians, Malaysins, Irish, Indians and Canadians when it comes to trivia. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that this is an international quiz – I guarantee that you’ll find at least some of the questions on the easy side. The categories include culture, sciences, lifestyle, history, media, world, entertainment, sport & games. Here are a couple of recent sample questions: “What theoretical physicist’s 1998 book ‘A Brief History of Time’ was followed by his 2005 book ‘A Briefer History of Time’?” & “Before his arrest on corruption charges and removal from office in January 2009, this US politician was involved in a number of controversies and saw his popularity rating dropping to almost zero. Who is he?” The latter question was accompanied with a picture of the politician in question:

This Monday is a special day for Triviology, too! Charlene will debut a brand new 7:00 quiz at Jade Lounge, a gorgeous little southeast bar with a delicious menu and finely crafted cocktails (check out this recent review of their excellent happy hour). Adventuresome souls who rode my annual BarFly Trivia Bus last year will recall that this is the bar where we met. As usual, I will have extra prizes on hand for the premier quiz, so there will be loot for at least the three highest scoring teams. Meanwhile, on the westside,  Margaret will host Mel Brooks quizzery at Ella St. Social Club, while I rock forth with standard quizzery at Hawthorne Hideaway – there’s something for everyone! OK, back to researching questions for my upcoming LOST trivia night . . .

First order of business – Triviology will proceed as usual tonight, for the quiz must go on! And, as if your Monday night choices for trivia weren’t awesome enough already (HawHide AND Da Club!), next Monday I’ll debut another weekly venue: Jade Lounge, with Charlene as your trivia jockey. By the way, thanks for coming out to our fantastic premier at The Speakeasy last week. Spook E. Raccoon really marked this place as his lair by scavenging the first win, but lots of other teams earned prizes, too. You know, the last time that I gave away movie tickets to a sneak preview, Jeff Bridges finally won an Oscar (the preview was for Crazy Heart) . . . since last week’s advance screening was for Get Him To The Greek, I can’t wait to see if Puff Daddy is finally recognized by The Academy for HIS body of work!
I should also announce that we are retiring a Triviology venue – Wxyz is on hiatus from the quizzery. We may return in the fall, but for now, your Tuesday night quiz dilemma is simply whether to play at The Speakeasy or at Sewickly’s. It’s a win-win situation, but here’s a compelling argument for Sewickly’s – they have launched an amazing new happy hour every day from 4:30 – 7, which they will continue offering ONLY to trivia players untill 9:00 on Tuesdays! Their already cheap (and stiff!) drinks well drinks will be only $2 – that shit is bananas! Also, they have expanded their menu to include several items for only $3: Caesar Salad, beef gyro, chicken quesadilla, a trio of sliders . . . that is so inexpensive, people – who are you to resist?!
If matching your wits against fellow Portlanders isn’t challenging enough for you, this Saturday brings a rare opportunity to dole out intellectual smackdowns to Liberians, Singaporeans, and of course The Dutch . . . June 5th is the annual World Quizzing Championships! Individual competitors world-wide will take the same quiz at roughly the same time, which is why I will start the Portland quiz at noon. The competition runs a couple of hours, and includes topics in several different categories. Don’t let the fact that this is an international competition intimidate you – some of the questions will be totally easy for most Americans (“Although she had already created and starred in the comedy series 30 Rock, this American actress and comedienne gained international fame when she impersonated Sarah Palin on a number of occasions on Saturday Night Live. Her name?”), though others are indeed much tougher (“The castle of Durnstein near Vienna held which famous prisoner from December 1192 to early 1193?”). I don’t expect the USA to beat the British, who are the perennial champions, but we did kick Bangladesh’s butt last year, and this year I’d like to crush Latvia, too – join us! Also The Spare Room has amazing hashbrowns, and they serve breakfast all day.
