The Elevegeddon Is Upon Us!

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Behold the 2009 Barfly Trivia Challenge Bus champions, Freaks of the Industry!
They won $100 cash, and a cheap trophy, for dominating the quizzery on this annual adventure. Jealous? You too, can ride the bus, but you’ll have to wait another year for Triviology to go mobile again. 14 mighty teams battled it out . . . and battle we did! Sarah put the “fight” in team Boyfight:
. . . and she may or may not be responsible for the mysterious black eye which appeared on the face of a wrestler on an opposing team:
. . . see?. . .
Check out more trivia bus pictures on this Facebook album.

But what, pray tell, is this mysterious “Elevegeddon”? Well, Triviology currently rocks forth at 11 different venues, and to achieve the “Elevegeddon,” your team (or any individual members) must simply play at all of them – wins aren’t necessary. And the benefits of achieving this feat, aside from the obvious glory of marking your territory all over town? Wellsir, completing the Elevegeddon grants you one (and ONLY one) tally point towards “Titanship” in my annual tournament, The Clash of the Trivia Titans, which is held each February.

During the tournament, everyone is welcome to participate in the first quiz of this two-tiered competition, The Olympian Open. Whoever wins the Open becomes the wild card seed to compete in the main event, The Titan Invitational, and will quiz up against other teams who have earned their Titan status by gaining a particular number of wins during the preceding year. So, let’s say that the qualifying number of wins is 15 this year (it won’t be as high as that, though!) – if your team only has 14 wins, and you score an Elevegeddon, that extra tally point bumps you up to Titan status!

To keep track of the venues at which you’ve played, I have made quiz schedules which resemble punch cards. Grab one at any of my trivia nights, and your trivia jockey will initial it to verify your attendance, after the quiz. 11 venues – collect ’em all! And remember, playing trivia at the sparsely attended venues increases your chance of victory! Play now at Ella Street Social Club (Mondays @ 7:00) and Hutch on Holgate (Wednesday @ 8:00) before they get all super-popular and you have to show up way early to get a seat!

Taking Trivia To The Streets

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Looking for more territory to mark with your trivia prowess? Then ride the Barfly Super Trivia Challenge Bus with me tomorrow (Saturday, October 10th) – tickets are still availabe! If you miss it, you’ll have to wait another whole year for a crack at winning the $100 cash prize (and a cheap trophy!), just for showing off how smart you are while partying with your new frenemies! The bus will transport us to several different bars all over Portland, and I will host a drunked-down round of trivia at each. We’ll meet at a top secret location, where you’ll enjoy free appetizers and do some smack-talking to your rival teams, then launch forth into a night of quizzery adventure like no other. Barfly bussers pay no cover charges, and are the envy of all who witness their radness – join us! If you’d like a taste of how the mobile Triviology rolls, read this summary of the 2007 bus. Costumes are NOT required . . . but they are awesome!!
Dozens of lucky Triviologists won extra prizes during this week’s Wordstock quizzery. Congratulations to one and all for your impressive literature knowledge AND for your superior taste buds, which identified different flavors of vodka, jelly bellies, and baby food. By the way, for those of you that won the handsome tote bags I handed out this week, the ticket contained in the package within gains you free entry into the Wordstock book fair, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center. It so happens that I have a few of those tickets left over – if you’d like one (or a Wordstock water bottle or poster), just shoot me an Email (shannon@shanrockstrivia.com) or a text message (503/957-7806), and the first four folks who request them can come on over to my pad and pick them up (and see where the trivia magic happens!). And speaking of free stuff, if you like beer, you should attend my Peter’s 19th Hole quiz this Wednesday, the 14th. Trivia starts at 8:00, but Budweiser representatives will be there at 7:00 with beer samples – come drink up!

Saturday’s Cubicle Quiz on “Office Space” & “The Office” was an excellent team-building opportunity, and when it’s time for performance reviews, the legion of Triviologists which attended will receive special consideration for promotions. As for the quizzery, I fear that these guys, The Tits, may have suffered from a lack of teamwork. Someone spent a little too much time mugging for the camera while a team conference was in session:

The Cubicle Quiz champions, and the Employees of the Month, are “Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster”!

I’ve got a couple more great thematic quizzes on the horizon. First of all, on Monday, November 2nd, there will be an “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” quiz at Ella Street Social Club, showtime at 7:00. I’m already writing the questions, and its some of the funnest “research” I have ever done! Kyle is also a huge fan of the show, and will be your host at this event. Also coming soon is the much anticipated Simpsons quiz! Join Michele at Peter’s 19th Hole on Saturday, November 7th for this event . . . as Moe would say – who are you to resist?!?
