This is the Super Bowl of trivia; the Oscars of pub quizzery...there will be one team to rule them all! Everyone is invited to compete in this annual two-tiered Triviology tournament for loads of trophies, prizes, and glory! Even if you have never played trivia before, you are welcome to join in the Olympian Open. After those teams receive prizes, the Olympian champion will be awarded their trophy and become the wild card seed which goes on to compete in the Titan Invitational, along with the winningest squads of the whole trivia season. The biggest prize that the overall Titan champions will receive is a free, private, customized quiz which ShanRock will host in your home, at your work, or for your favorite non-profit organization. Thanks so much for choosing us, Portland Monthly – it makes me feel like pumping my fist in the air, Sarah X. Dylan style!
During the above photo shoot, Sarah (or SeXyDee, as I like to call her) was celebrating her knowledge of Arrested Development – specifically Boyfight! Perhaps this was a portent of the David & Goliath story that was to follow . . . this Thursday, a scrappy little duo named Boyfight hurled a stone into Fear, Fear For Your Safety’s mighty noggin. They were especially thrilled to win at La Merde, where FF4YS helm a veritable dynasty, because they consider it “The Sunday New York Times of ShanRock’s Triviology!”
And now, it’s time for What I Did For My Thanksgiving Vacation: I finally updated the Hall of Fame! You can now count up all of your wins for the trivia season, which begins each year with the Clash Of The Trivia Titans (which is tentatively scheduled for 2/20/10 at The Spare Room)! And who amongst you wants to score the first win at the new place? ALL of you?!? Well there can only be one champion, so come down to The Beauty Bar this Tuesday (12/7) at 7:00 to make your mark at this new West Side venue! This man will be your host:

If you are fan of one of the greatest dramedies in history, you don’t want to miss the Freaks & Geeks trivia night this Monday (12/6), 7:00 at Ella Street Social Club. We weren’t able to book the band Feedback, but I can guarantee that there will be alcoholic beer in the kegs. I will host the quizzery, and Margaret will be playing, just for fun (even if she kicks everybody’s butt, she won’t accept the trophy, the prize, or the winning title!). And since Margaret, just like Lindsay Weir, is a former Mathlete, we will be handing out these certificates to teams that score higher than her on each round:
Here are the results of our friendly little competition to determine which teams and venues could collect the most donations:
East Burn: Bronson PincHo Chi Minh Trail won the “Punched Hunger In The Throat” trophy;
Sewickly’s: Bea Arthur’s Dick In A Box won the “Hunger Sucks; We Rule!” trophy . . . and donated 53 items to the cause – the largest number of food items contributed by a single team! Thank you so much BA’s DinaB for your generosity – you DO rule! Your efforts, combined with foodstuffs from SalmonElla Fitzgerald and Linda Is A Whore helped Sewickly’s win the venue trophy for most donations. The Shaver food drive aids 170 families in need . . . and just this week at trivia we collected 178 items – well done, people! If anyone would still like to help out, come to Sewickly’s and drop some non-perishables in the collection bin by next Tuesday’s trivia, and we’ll get it to Shaver. Check out this Sewickly grub:
Please take note – there will be no quiz at The Slammer today! They will be hosting a Toy Run – doing good deeds while serving good drinks! You should still treat yourself to a visit to see their holiday lights, which one of my Triviologist calls “The Peacock Lane of the dive bar set!”

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! I hope you’re all having a lovely day, doing whatever it is you need to do to enjoy the holiday – dinner with the family, watching Freaks & Geeks in preparation for the Dec. 6th lunar quiz, escaping the family to hang out at your neighborhood bar, or . . . (like me!) wearing pajamas all day long while watching movies with friends, eating pizza, and drinking bourbon & gingers! So, guess what? No quizzery tonight! Here is the complete list of my venues which are trivia-free this week (11/24 – 11/27): WorkShop Pub, La Merde, Kenton Club, The Slammer. I am indeed thankful to have a day off, but I am WAY more thankful that I have a career that allows me to do all kinds of things that I love, with all kinds of smart, fun, interesting people – my sincerest thanks to you ALL!
I will now appeal to your competitive spirits to enlist your help collecting grub for the annual Shaver Elementary School food drive. Do it for the children! Or, do it for yourself . . . as we are going to make this food drive “interesting” by pitting team versus team, and venue versus venue. Bring any non-perishable food items next week (11/28 – 12/3) to any of these venues: East Burn, Ella St. Social Club, Sewickly’s, The Hutch, La Merde. We will award a trophy not only to the venue that has collected the most food at the end of the week, but also to each team that brings the most food items to each quiz. Help us punch hunger in the throat! And if you’re still feeling generous on into December, you can contribute to The Raphael House (women’s clothing), Adopt-A-Family (money or toys), Doernbecher Toy Drive, all at The Slammer (this hard-working generosity is just one reason that the proprietory, Lizzy, is Portland’s Best BadAss BarKeep).
